Optimizing IT Architecture for a Rapidly Growing Biotech Company 

Background

In recent years, a fast-expanding biotech firm experienced substantial growth, and recognized the need to evolve their IT infrastructure. Given this context, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) sought assistance from Osprey Software, leveraging their existing partnership, to harness and present vital IT architecture data to the company’s Board of Directors (BoD).  

Challenge

As the firm expanded swiftly over five years, both the IT organization and its supported application library prospered accordingly. This rapid growth posed significant challenges: the IT department needed a comprehensive understanding of the applications in their purview, the business functions each application supported, and an additional set of approximately 20 data points per application. This comprehensive dataset was pivotal for BoD presentations to elucidate and justify proposed IT initiatives, programs, and overarching goals, all with a strict timeline of four weeks for completion.  

Solution

Osprey Software deployed its expertise in Life Sciences IT architectures, data analysis, and roadmap planning to tackle the firm’s needs. Osprey’s swift comprehension of the project scope and collaborative partnership with the client’s BIS group, allowed them to identify deliverables and craft a strategic action plan efficiently. The team agreed quickly on the format and structure of the deliverables. The solution involved aggregating software information from diverse sources to create a centralized, easily interpretable application database. This centralization facilitated a clear understanding for application owners to commence effective management. 

Results

Upon project culmination, the biotech firm gained a comprehensive database of their applications, along with a visual representation categorized by business function, including overlays for regulatory classifications and onboarding/offboarding processes. Additionally, Osprey provided an e-zine featuring a concise, one-page view of each application, materials outlining a proposed Strategic Index decision – making framework, and mappings for each application. Various visualizations offered different perspectives on the software inventory, significantly exceeding client expectations.
