Modernizing Enterprise IT Operations and Application Support for a Financial Services Organization
Background
A global financial services organization engaged Osprey Software to support a complex business transition following the divestiture of a key business unit. The engagement focused on identifying, separating, and modernizing Portfolio Services applications and supporting infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining operational continuity.
Challenge
Over time, the client’s Portfolio Services environment had evolved into a tightly coupled ecosystem of applications, services, scheduled processes, and configurations. Business logic supporting multiple functions was intertwined within a shared codebase, making it difficult to determine ownership, support independent deployments, or prepare assets for transition.
The complexity introduced significant operational risk and limited scalability. Business stakeholders needed a clear separation between legacy and transitioning functionality while ensuring that critical applications remained stable throughout the transition process.
Additionally, deployment procedures relied heavily on manual processes, environment-specific configurations, and hardcoded credentials, creating security concerns and increasing the potential for deployment errors.
Solution
Osprey designed and led a comprehensive application modernization and restructuring initiative focused on separation of concerns, operational stability, and future scalability.
The team created a new standalone Portfolio Services application containing only Portfolio Services functionality and reusable APIs required by other systems. Existing applications were refactored into independently deployable solutions with dedicated configurations, infrastructure support models, and clearly defined ownership boundaries.
Osprey also restructured Python batch processes into a standardized framework using organized folder structures and Rundeck YAML-based configuration management to improve maintainability and deployment consistency.
To further modernize the environment, Osprey eliminated hardcoded database connections and credentials, implemented environment-specific configuration management, and integrated AWS Secrets Manager to strengthen security and simplify deployment processes.
Working closely with Infrastructure Operations teams, Osprey redesigned server structures and deployment procedures, enabling repeatable script-driven deployments while reducing manual intervention.
Results
The engagement successfully transformed a complex, tightly coupled application environment into a scalable and independently managed ecosystem aligned with the client’s business transition objectives.
Key outcomes included:
- Clear separation of business ownership across applications and services
- Improved maintainability through a modular application architecture
- Enhanced security through the elimination of hardcoded credentials and adoption of AWS Secrets Manager
- Reduced deployment risk through automated, environment-aware configuration management
- Elimination of manual production configuration updates
- Improved scalability and flexibility for future development initiatives
- More reliable and repeatable deployment processes
- A cleaner operational model supporting long-term ownership, supportability, and transition readiness
Client Feedback
The solution was well received due to its measurable operational improvements. The modernized application architecture, enhanced configuration management practices, and automated deployment processes improved reliability, reduced deployment effort, and successfully supported the client’s transition objectives while positioning the environment for long-term growth.
